Trains

Melodic phrasing over a broken-chord left-hand accompaniment, with a chromatic neighbour-note motif.

How to practise it

  • Keep the E and D♯ of bars 2 and 6 light and even, without leaning on the E. Listen for a soft, rocking motif, quiet as the p asks.
  • In bars 3-5 the left hand plays three sixteenths and the right hand answers, so the two hands share one line. Loop bars 3-5 at 40 BPM until the handover sounds smooth.
  • Bar 8 changes the earlier E, G♯, B into E, C, B. Let the A in bar 9 ring for the whole bar.

Where this score came from

Arrangement for this app (CC0)

Theme only: the pickup and bars 1-8 of WoO 59, through the theme's first cadence on the A-minor tonic. The B and C sections of the complete piece are not included, and the ending is simplified to a single-pass cadence instead of the repeat back to bar 1. The printed fingering (5 on the first note, 1-2-4 then 5 on the open-hand figures of bars 2 to 4 and 6, 1-5-4 on the octave in bar 4, 1-3-2 then 1 in bars 7 and 8) is our own (2026-10-05).

Changes from the source: Theme only: the pickup and bars 1-8 of WoO 59; the rest of the piece is left out. Bar 8 ends the piece: the final A is held as a dotted quarter to fill the bar, instead of the first ending's quarter note and the repeat back to the start.
